Ah yes, a beautiful model!  We have it also, and have been playing around with some custom ideas for several months.  I want to see if we can do something around the "Christmas Tree" panel behind the drivers' seat.  Looking forward to your ideas....

Freakmaster I'm thinking about making a custom circuit board with small LEDs mounted that would fit behind the gray parts and yellow hands in a "Y" arrangement, so they could pulse in motion like the "real" flux capacitor.  The board would be 0.5mm thin so it would fit behind the parts.  The board could be black so it would blend in well.  Definitely a lot less expensive than a screen, and would use a lot less power.  What do you think?

Freakmaster Looks good!  But for the headlights I think warm white would look more like the movie version, which had old incandescent headlights:

Hi everyone, with the Coronavirus quarantine here in Minnesota, this gives me a lot of time (!!) to work from home and continue to develop new kits.  One of the kits I'm focused on finishing is the light and sound kit for the DeLorean.  One of the key areas of focus for that, not surprisingly, is the flux capacitor!  After many hours of designing and revising the setup, I think I've arrived at a good prototype.  The plan is to have the LEDs and control circuitry all self-contained on and behind the flux capacitor, and to fit everything inside the car where the capacitor is mounted.  Based on the design, no LEGO parts should need to be modified.

I plan to have this made using extremely thin, flexible material, so the lights will sit on the front of the capacitor, the board will bend under and behind the front panel, and the control circuitry will be mounted on the backside of the black brick-built panel.

Here's a photo of the non-functional prototype, printed on paper until I can get the circuit board made:

If you can imagine the "Y" shaped panel on the front, the rectangles in the middle will be cut-out "fingers" that will pass between the studs under the black panel, and the control circuitry will be on the back.  The whole thing should be held in place by the LEGO parts.

As you can see, everything is extremely compact.  There are 17 LEDs on the front panel, a density no other company has been able to achieve at this scale.  Because of the control circuitry, the effect should be movie-accurate with lights pulsing toward the center.  Today there are some light kits for sale that just have oversized flashing LEDs that don't look at all realistic.  We think it's time to fix that.

Stay tuned for more updates!  It should take 3 weeks to get the first prototype circuit board back from the US factory, and this first board will be yellow.  That will allow me to test the fit and function.  If all of that works well, we will order the black circuit boards and hopefully have something truly mind-blowing to share.

Freakmaster Thanks for the video-- I think the result looks really good.  I have some other ideas to try out once I can get back into the office and dig into some older parts. :-)
